Health and Safety of Pupils on Educational Visits – Good Practice Guidelines
The following guides are examples of research and documentation produced to enable teachers and outdoor leaders to better understand the risks, responsibilities and requirements involved with Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC).
In the United Kingdom the English Department for Education and Employment has published a good practice guide called Health and Safety of Pupils on Educational Visits. This guide is designed to help governors, head teachers, teachers, and others ensure that pupils stay safe and healthy on school visits. The guide also has useful forms and templates that can be used by party leaders in liaising with local education authorities, governing bodies, head teachers and other parties.

This is a guideline for good practise and clarifies schools’ responsibilities regarding EOTC safety, provides ideas and examples of how requirements can be met, and safety improved. The guide is designed to assist boards of trustees, principals, and teachers to enhance safety in EOTC programmes and meet their obligations under relevant statutory and best practice requirements. They may also be useful to other parties and schools in other countries as a guide to promoting best practice.
